Warm Mix and Hot Mix Asphalt Explained

by | Feb 6, 2020

All asphalt is a mix of different elements designed to harden and cure, forming a strong, flexible, and reliable pavement. But depending on the particular mix and temperatures used, asphalt can have significantly different properties, benefits, and installation styles.

Of these varieties, Hot Mixes and Warm Mixes (of various compositions) are by far the most common. Here are the main differences between the two:

Hot Mix Asphalt

As you would expect, Hot Mix asphalt is heated and poured at higher temperatures than Warm Mix—between 300 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot Mix is the most common asphalt used in the United States, and it’s favored for roads and highways due to its strength, weather resistance, and installation speed.

But Hot Mix is tricky to handle, and because it starts out so hot, Hot Mix should only be poured in warm environmental conditions. Otherwise the cooling will be too rapid, causing installation problems.

Warm Mix Asphalt

Warm Mix Asphalt is used in about 30% of all paving projects in the United States and is produced at temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the lower temperatures involved, Warm Mix is more forgiving and can be produced at a lower price point than hot mix. It also incorporates more binding agents, allowing for much easier handling and installation in low temperatures.

In fact, Warm Mix is the ideal solution for low temperature or odd-job installations. It can be shipped farther than Hot Mix and used at night or in tunnels. It’s safer and easier to handle too, generating fewer fumes and less smoke or dust than Hot Mix.

The particular asphalt type and blend that’s right for your project will depend on a number of factors, ranging from seasonal conditions to the location and expected use of the pavement.
