Asphalt: Key Components of a Livable Future

by | Oct 27, 2017

“Livable community” has become a new, popular buzzword used in urban planning and transportation circles. With the U.S. population expected to increase by 100 million over the next 40 years, effective coordination of housing, transportation, energy, and environmental matters will be needed to ensure quality of life while at the same time expediting the flow of both freight and people in the safest and most cost-effective manner.

When city planners start to talk about how people and freight move around in a community, you know what they’ll be talking about (whether they realize it or not)? Yep, you guessed it – asphalt.

You can think about a livable community and future as being a balance of a couple of essential societal goals – vibrant communities, vital economies, and sustainable environments. Probably not too many people really give the matter much thought, but all three of those goals rely on sustainable transportation. In turn, that means asphalt plays a fundamental role!

Let’s look at why asphalt is so important in each of those three areas:

Vibrant communities. Within a city (or any kind of municipality), there are going to be an assortment of different kinds of communities. An example of this is faith communities. When churches and other places of worship host their services, people need a place to park their vehicles. Asphalt is, by far, the leading choice for most church parking lots. It offers tremendous value, which is something most churches are quite mindful about.

Residential communities—and especially apartment complexes—is another example where asphalt makes a big difference. Those who live in apartments want to come home to a property that looks great and appears as if the property management team actually cares. They want to pull up and see the grass is trimmed, the buildings are well-maintained, and the parking lot is smooth, black, and has bright yellow stripes. This is especially important to residents when they have guests over!

Vital economies. Asphalt paving services are used by many different kinds of clients, including business owners and property managers. Business men and women in any kind of industry want to work in a place that is visually appealing. Parking lots full of potholes and loose gravel can be demoralizing for employees and, even worse, potentially drive business away.

Given the choice, customers will always choose to spend their hard-earned money at a business that appears to care over one that doesn’t. The first impression on customers is your parking lot. Whether they choose to pull in or drive by is up to you!

Asphalt plays a role in that regard, but there’s even more when you consider the fact that hiring a local company to handle your paving needs has several positive effects on the local economy. Doing so means more employment for neighbors and additional tax revenue that goes to our local schools, police and fire departments, and libraries.

Sustainable environments. We’ve previously noted that asphalt is the most-recycled product in the United States. Well, the fact asphalt is so heavily recycled means old product isn’t just taking up space in landfills.

Beyond its recyclability, asphalt manages storm water by reducing runoff, promoting filtration, and protecting streams. As the rain water seeps through porous paving, it is naturally filtered, which helps to replenish our aquifers with cleaner water. (And you can’t even overstate the importance of what that means for the health and safety of everyone who lives in our community!)
