How Asphalt Benefits Us All

by | Jan 23, 2018

This winter has already delivered some thaw/freeze cycles—although, it feels like there’s been a whole lot more of the “freeze” (which is good for ice fishing and snowmobiling!)—and there’s bound to be more before temperatures start warming up for good. This means our West Michigan roads are taking quite a beating this year – and they’re likely in store for more!

As you know, the thaw/freeze cycles are responsible for spring potholes. In turn, those potholes are responsible for many drivers feeling frustrated.

Now, as with any avenue of life, frustrations can be misplaced in this case. It’s important for people to realize that the core issue isn’t actually the asphalt paving. Sure, that’s the part everyone sees and has to deal with, but the weather cycles are the contributing factor. Potholes are just a symptom of the problem!

In fact, paved asphalt surfaces make our lives much better. We’re not going to claim asphalt paving is perfect, but it does provide all of us with so many benefits, such as:

  • Safety. Auto accidents happen and—barring major, unfathomable technological advances—always will, but our roads are safer on account of asphalt paving. Why? Well, because asphalt creates the smoothest possible surface for driving. Smooth roads give the tires on your car the best possible contact and, in turn, this gives motorists the greatest amount of control.
  • Cost-effectiveness. Not only are smooth driving surfaces safer than uneven ones, they also save everyone’s hard-earned money. Fewer bumps in the road means less wear and tear on vehicles, which means less trips to see your mechanic.
  • Quiter communities. When cars and trucks bounce along on uneven surfaces, it creates a lot of noise – and smooth asphalt roads prevent this from happening. At the same time, though, asphalt plays a role absorbing the noise, thereby helping keep our neighborhoods—and especially those near high-traffic areas—quieter.
  • Aesthetic appeal. If the sound-reducing properties of asphalt is good, the improvement in appearance is even better. Think about the way a home looks so much better with a nice, even driveway, or how a business with a well-maintained, dark parking lot is more inviting. (Both are even better with a fresh sealcoat!)
  • Energy efficiency. Basic physics dictate the fact there is almost always going to be a certain degree of friction between a paved surface and the tires on your car. (We have to use “almost always” because we live in West Michigan and know there are times when we might as well break out ice skates to get where we need to go.) Smooth pavement reduces that friction—also known as “rolling resistance”—and increases the miles you get per gallon.
  • Environmental benefits. Not only do you get more miles per gallon, reduced rolling resistance lessens carbon dioxide emissions. In and of itself, that’s an outstanding environmental benefit, but there are others. Groundwater and our rivers and lakes are cleaner when debris in water is filtered as it passes through various layers of pavement. Oh yeah, and asphalt is the most recycled product in America (as we’ve noted here on our blog). (That’s also a financial benefit because it saves our nation an estimated $1.8 billion every year!)
  • Easier snow removal. Let’s wrap this list up with one benefit that is highly appropriate for our current season – it’s so much easier to clear away snow from driveways, parking lots, and roads when they’re paved!

Those are all ways our society at large benefits from asphalt paving, but it’s worth thinking about how you benefit when your paving needs are handled by professionals. If you’re a homeowner, this means increasing the financial value of your property and feeling pride when visitors comment on how great your driveway looks. If you own a business, your lot will be safe—so you won’t have to worry about safety issues—and inviting for new customers and clients.
