Asphalt: An Economic Rock Star

by | Nov 16, 2017

In about a week or so, it’s going to be Thanksgiving. This can be a great family holiday, one wherein we celebrate by eating delicious food, spending quality time with loved ones, and watching the Lions lose … but without any pressure to find “the perfect gift” for anyone.

(Just kidding about the Lions. If you follow the team, you know we have a 4-game winning streak on Thanksgiving now!)

Of course, it’s actually kind of weird we follow up a holiday for expressing how thankful we are with the biggest shopping days of the year – “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.” Sure, the initial idea behind those days may have been to buy gifts for others, but how many people are really buying 4K televisions as gifts nowadays?

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. Whereas the Best Buys and Amazons of the world really benefit from those other shopping days, most local businesses are probably quite glad American Express kept them in mind when it started Small Business Saturday back in 2010.

This year, consider purchasing gifts for loved ones—or even treating yourself—from local businesses like Threads on 8th, The Seasoned Home, The Lakeshore Marketplace, or Holland Furniture (to name just a few of the many locally-owned businesses in West Michigan). Doing so keeps money circulating and businesses open in our community – which is essential for our local economy.

Major shopping days certainly have their place in impacting the economy, but so too does asphalt paving!

(You probably should have known that was coming.)

Asphalt plays numerous roles in contributing to local economies. Some of these include:

  • Providing employment opportunities for men and women on road crews. Yes, it can be quite frustrating when roads are closed for construction. At the same time, though, it’s worth considering the fact that road work provides a steady paycheck for community members. The wages they earn allow them to purchase goods and services so money circulates in our local economy.
  • Paving the roads for deliveries. The materials businesses need must be delivered somehow, right? Well, truck drivers ensure deliveries are made, but they wouldn’t be able to do so in a safe, timely manner if not for paved surfaces!
  • Enabling employees to get to work. In addition to materials, roads allow employees and staff members to commute. It’s hard, after all, to run a business if you don’t have people performing essential jobs.

(We’d like to take a quick moment and express how thankful we are to have such an outstanding team who continually provide our customers with exceptional paving services!)

  • Improving property value. A quality paving job on your property—whether it’s your home or business—makes the property worth more than it otherwise would. If you’re a homeowner making mortgage payments, this can have a nice economic impact on your finances if you have private mortgage insurance (PMI). The improved valuation makes your home loan less risky to the lender (since loan-to-value ratio decreases), which means you can cancel PMI earlier and pocket the money you’d otherwise be spending.

One other economy-related to keep in mind about your parking lot: you can really improve the “local attorney economy” if you don’t maintain it!

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be hard to maintain, and we’ll be glad to help by repairing cracks and holes, improving drainage, and making sure it’s a safe surface for any visitor, guest, resident, or customer who walks on your property.

We noted just a little bit ago about how thankful we are for our team. Well, we also want to take this opportunity to say how thankful we are for our customers who consistently make us the top choice for paving services in West Michigan! We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday!
